What's the frequency, Michael?
Written by Riccardo Triolo

Rust-resistant and unconventional, even in their rawest, most radical version, REM is presenting in tournée its smashing latest studio work Accelerate, surely their best album since the epic New Adventures in Hi-fi (1996), the last before the drummer Bill Berry left the group.

In Accelerate there is everything that, today, should be found in a rock album: neither more nor less. Close to the live sound of the latest REM, produced by Jacknife Lee (formerly with U2, Kasabian, etc.), veterans of last summer's live sessions in Dublin, having brought out their first, brilliant live CD, Stipe, Buck and Mills have discovered new force, an urgent, programatic acceleration, bringing the group back to the glory of once upon a time, reconducting rock to its most immediate, most lacerating essence. In the era of the most dishonest lo-fi sophistery, of immaterial, abstract listening, rock once again sears in its lightning-like, physical, incisive experience.
