The Contemporary according to Galuppi
Written by Susanna Zattarin
The Galuppi Festival - Baldassarre’s Places 2008, is not only about “classical” music. The official program will actually include composers and musicians experimenting with mixtures of expressive genres of different nature, both technic and linguistic.

The intervention of ensembles researching new musical and visual forms, exploring the stimulating relationship between the world of music and the one of cinema, will stand out. In this perspective two famous groups, the Salonisti Veneti and the Gomalan Brass Quintet have been invited.

The former will be performing at the Hungarian Hotel in the Lido of Venice on the 11th of October, and the latter in Palazzo Vendramin Calergi, home of the Venetian Casino, on the 25th of October. Both of them focus on overcoming the anachronistic divisions between the so-called intellectual and popular music.

The Salonisti Veneti became famous thanks to their interpretation of a repertoire ranging from classical to jazz music, pop and film soundtracks, breaking the traditional schemes and turning the performance into a global music event. Not by chance the program ranges, to give some examples, from Brahms to Shostakovic, Rota, Morricone and Piazzolla.

The cultural direction followed by the Gomalan Brass Quintet, an internationally established brass instruments group, is equally significative. Their program crosses diverse historical periods: Gabrieli, Puccini, Morricone, Ottolini, from the poetic expressions of the XVI Century musician to film soundtracks and recent pop pieces.
