The courage of light. Bice Curiger's Biennale
Written by Luka Stojnic

bice.jpgOnce men believed that colors emanated luminous radiations our visual apparatus could perceive, being thus enabled to distinguish semblances and appearances. Sometimes later, men tought our eyes radiated luminous waves that hit things and brought their reflection back to us, locating the nature of in this journey from our eyes and back. Eventually, we realized light was the “simple” phenomenon through which the world was revealed.

This year, the Biennale recites the word and form of light, leaping over five centuries to embrace one of the greatest light-visionaries, Tintoretto, who will make Renaissance at its best and contemporary art meet, with no way out.

ILLUMInations opens its doors to the perception of artistic phenomena from all over the world, presenting the many languages and worlds arranged by curator Bice Curiger for this 54th edition. Needless to say, our memory goes back half playfully, half seriously to Hugo Ball opening the age of Dadaism at the Cafè Voltaire. A pivotal year for the first global falgellation: when Zurich witnessed the explosion of the aesthetic and formal values established and promoted by institutions ready to flagellate the world. illuminazioni1.jpg

There were times and social contexts where artists had to know how to sell themselves: ages of slumber where image was a marketable good, and the response to a world adapting to the logics of a globalized market. Yet, this numeric globalization, this aesthetic share market seems to be tottering, due to the world´s natural transformations, pushing what we call “beauty” towards a confrontation with new logics, new aesthetics, new languages. Courage: this is how I would characterize Curiger´s contribution, manifesting an invaluable need to change the perception of images rather than the images themselves.
