A double identity
Written by Carlotta Scarpa

temievariazioni2.jpgArt in a collection lives on motifs that curators and critics bring to light in a game of cross-references and repetitions. Temi & Variazioni feeds on these principles. The exhibition will be unveiled on October 15th at Peggy Guggenheim’s, whose inexhaustible ore is the subject-matter of Luca Massimo Barbero’s curatorial talent. Language as meaning underlining writing: Scrittura e spazio is Ariadne’s clue for the occasion, writing as language, sign coming out of the canvas. Since ever, mankind outlined shapes to express their thought.

Next step is symbol, where sign steps in by means of a stylized definition of an object or concept. Signs and symbols later parallel in the form of writing, key of interpretation to the art on show. In chronological order we first find letter types, then Picasso’s and Carrà’s collages inspired by Lawrence Weiner’s dynamic experiments and Vincenzo Agnetti’s mysterious tables.

temievariazioni1.jpgThis exhibition plays on contrasts, Piet Mondrian’s art with Gianni Colombo’s, Mario Nigro’s with that of Rudolf Stingel and the unconditioned writing of Jackson Pollock. In this context, and with the cooperation of Archivio Gastone Novelli in Rome, there will be a tribute to Gastone Novelli, protagonist of the art scene in the 50s and 60s. Art presented at 1968 Biennale will be exhibited, together with unedited experiments on language, sized on red hues where the influx of Venetian XV century maestros is clearly visible.
