Timeless snapshots. Erwitt, story-teller of people and emotions
Written by Carlotta Scarpa

erwitt1.jpgThe photographs of the great master Elliott Erwitt are snapshots which narrate life: indeed, they are authentic still life creations, the coherent plot of reality, visual material which is intended to disturb. A human comedy where the sense of humour blends with accusation, where the pose mingles with casuality. Stories, moments, personages and emotions in which the eye of the photographer wanders, choosing snapshots without any filters or prejudices.

Erwitt makes the moment stand still. He immortalizes it in timeless images, where high technical ability plays with sensitivity and with very human lightness.

erwitt2.jpgThere is a naturalness which enchants spectators, as in the snapshot of the Chihuahua dressed in a little coat and beret, on an Autumn morning; others are moving, like the image of the mother of his colleague and friend Robert Capa, shedding tears over the tomb of her son.

Born in Paris in 1928 of Russian Jewish parents, Erwitt spent his childhood in Italy until 1938, then moving definitely to the United States with his family. A member since 1953 of the historic Magnum agency, founded at the end of the Second World War by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, Erwitt has immortalized, with a journalistic touch, the last six decades of our history: from the 1959 image of the dialogue between Richard Nixon and Nikita Kruschev, or the photos of Che Guevara, Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy, to the more recent ones which portray President Obama and his wife Michelle.
