The life of real dreams. Gino Rossi at Ca’ Pesaro
Written by Luisa Turchi

04.-gino_rossi_barene_a_burano.jpgSeventy years from his passing, an exhibition celebrates the life of Gino Rossi with art by Rossi himself and other contemporary artists from the Fondazione Cariverona collection and from Ca’ Pesaro’s own. Gino Rossi interiorized the teachings of Russian painter Vladimir Šereševskij, his travels to France and to the Netherlands, the influence of such artists as Anglada, Gauguin, Serusier, Emile Bernard, and Van Gogh. He participated to innovative exhibitions at Ca’ Pesaro curated by Nino Barbantini with fellow artists Arturo Martini, Boccioni, and Moggioli.

In gesture and expression, Rossi shows assertive yet soft touches, fragmented and wavy lines, material tones exasperated in warm and cold hues. In portraiture, the artist let his restless soul show up, though never completely as it finds itself a prisoner of the speechless, humble faces of the fishermen that populate the paintings. Robust vitality resides in the anti-gracious element that forces us away from contemporary decadent aesthetic models. Since 1926, Rossi will be institutionalized in Treviso and Venice – his diagnosis: paranoid schizophrenia with a tendency to escape, as noted in his medical record. His suffering art still showed a desire to break away into a personal reality of dream.
