The Shape of Water. May in Venice
Written by Mariachiara Marzari
vela_045.jpgThe relationship between Venice and water, its lagoon, the sea that almost touches it, the water that drove the history and fortune of this city, is known to everybody. However, today it seems that this relationship isn’t what it used to be. Every day, water dictates the days of those who live or visit the city and what passes by unnoticed is the ability to relate with water around us as a resource and repossess the essence of this place.

There are a few events that can help this process: the Festa della Sensa, on May 12 and 13, the country festival Sagra del Carciofo Violetto in Sant’Erasmo Island on may 13, Vogalonga on May 20, and Velalonga on May 27.

These occasions stimulate us to regain a fruitful relationship with Venice, with the outer islands of the Venetian Lagoon, with traditions, territory, and with water, above all. Whether on a sailing boat or a smaller rowboat, even on kayak or floating bicycle (they exist!) there are a myriad ways to enjoy these events, participate, and live the maritime tradition of Venice.

Let’s take a look at some old photographs and you will see what Venice used to be all about. Venice is a water city not only for the million tourists that visit it every year but for those who live in it, too. To take your boat and row to a friend’s house, have a spritz aboard, repossess canals and quays must be the norm in town.

Spending your Sunday fun day out in the lagoon, dock by an isolated, secluded island is more than diversion: it means to develop a more attentive way to be a tourist and to respect the environment that surrounds us. Stop by the islands of Certosa, Sant’Erasmo, or San Giorgio on your way back from the beach and bathe in the sunset light that paints the Arsenale red. Live the water, and you will live Venice.
