The Lagoon of Venice is a prime example of millennia-old coexistence of man and nature. In this large wetland, biodiversity lives with large architectural and artistic heritage: environment and society grew together over time.

The lagoon has been essential in the rise of the Republic of Venice – it protected the city from its enemies and provided access to maritime trade and products like salt and fish. In exchange, man intervened to protect it.

In the garden at the V-A-C Foundation, project Laguna Viva restores and fosters dialogue on the deep interdependence between Venice and its context, residents, visitors, and nature.

Assemble is the London-based collective that operates transversally in architecture, design, and art, and was chosen by V-A-C Foundation to develop, in cooperation with organization We Are Here Venice, a project to show how the lagoon functions, physically, in two large basins, where the natural habitat has been recreated.

These microcosms are a wonderful chance to understand and popularize the natural systems the very existence of Venice relies upon.
